What's so great about Wellfleet?

Fun Stuff to do: The best kayaking on Cape Cod -explore the National Seashore, find secluded beaches on Great Island, try and reach Jeremy's Point. Swimming in Wellfleet's pristine kettle ponds and Wellfleet's magnificent ocean beaches. Go clamming. Snack on Wellfleet's world famous oysters. Walk around the village of Wellfleet - groceries, ice cream, Hatches fresh produce, Mac's fresh fish, blueberry pancakes for breakfast at the Lighthouse,  art galleries galore, and kid-friendly restaurants.  Walk down the beach to the left to Wellfleet Pier,  get burgers, fried clams,  ice cream from the walk-up window and sit at the picnic tables by the water. Go to the farmer's market in town and get fresh corn and organic greens. Deep water fishing in Wellfleet Harbor with the Naviator - they have the rods & reels & they'll clean the fish for you. Fish off the pier or at the Chequessett Neck dike. Play tennis - it's walking distance from the Wellfleeter.  Bike the Cape Cod Rail Trail starting from Wellfleet. Bike trails in Provincetown too, bike rentals in Wellfleet. The Wellfleet drive-in and the Wellfleet indoor movie theatre.  Go to a show at  Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre  (Voted Best of Boston  - Boston Magazine).  See paintings by great artists in over a dozen art galleries,  go sightseeing in Provincetown and stay for night-time entertainment.  Go to Duck Harbor beach to see the sunset. Take sailing lessons, rent a sailboat,  rent a surfboard and go to LeCount Hollow beach. Seaside golfing down the road at Chequessett Yacht & Country Club.  Swim at Long Pond, Duck Pond, Great Pond.. there's others. All have nice clear water. Yoga classes available, dine on thin crust pizza al fresco at Town Pizza.  Winslow's Tavern also has outdoor seating and much of their food is locally grown - fantastic. Order the 'catch of the day' at the Bookstore Restaurant or the Wicked Oyster.  Explore Great Island - it's part of the National Seashore, protected land. Take a walk on Uncle Tim's bridge and explore the salt marshes,  then go out for lobster. Or call Mac's at the Pier and order lobsters, they'll cook them for you for free, you pick up, dine on the beach, or in front of the cottage overlooking the water!  Try the locally grown oysters - they're world famous.

More Fun Stuff to do: There's the Wellfleet flea market, National Seashore nature center, the Marconi site where Marconi invented wireless, visit the Highland Light Lighthouse in Truro, Audubon Society Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary - what a great place!  Go on a whale watch in nearby Provincetown, stroll around 'P-town' and pick a restaurant, there's lots of little shops. The seashore has beautiful sunsets,  scenic drives, learn to surf,  go birding, or don't go anywhere - just listen to the shorebirds.  Kayak, swim, or walk to Great Island at low tide, explore Cape Cod National Seashore, try to make it to Jeremy Point (lotion up!), collect sea shells, watch the oystermen tend to their oysters, relax, let the kids have fun collecting & exploring.  At night read a book,  begin writing your book, listen to the waves, watch the moon over the water, breath in the salty sea air. The sea!

Ocean beach - Henry David Thoreau called the sandy stretch along Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown "The Great Beach."  The waves are strong here. Respect mother nature.  Learn to swim and have a buddy when you're in the ocean. This 40-mile uninterrupted stretch of beach is the largest on the East Coast. There is also walking and biking trails, marshes, fresh- and salt-water ponds, forests, historic structures, and lighthouses.  The big wave ocean beach is about 3 miles from the Wellfleeter cottages.

Marconi Station Site - Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi set up shop on the high cliffs overlooking what is now Marconi Beach in Wellfleet in the early 1900s to work on his project of sending wireless transmissions across the Atlantic. While repairs were being made to the Wellfleet station, Marconi sent a transmission across the seas from a station in Nova Scotia. In 1903, Marconi sent historic messages back and forth from the U.S. President and the King of England from Wellfleet. Today, a model of the station sits at the original site.  A nice hiking trail starts there.

Great Island - A Wellfleet treasure. Great Island was a center of mariner activity in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, a walking trail winds around between sand dunes, salt marshes and the sea.  You can kayak to this protected ecosystem in about 25 minutes from the Wellfleeter cottages. (Rent kayaks at Jack's in Wellfeet.) There are no houses here.  It's pristine and secluded.  Strong swimmers can swim there. Weak swimmers can walk there at low tide.

Wellfleet:   Authentic character and charm about 75 miles out into the Atlantic ocean.  About half of Wellfleet is preserved as part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. There's a unique nautical history dating to the 1700's, a quaint central village, and a plentiful supply of fresh fish and shellfish, including the world famous Wellfleet oyster. The public beaches - ocean, bay, and pond - are beautiful and not crowded like other parts of Cape Cod.
